Looking for Leaders
The Neighborhood Leadership Institute trains residents in Summit County’s diverse communities to improve quality of life through grassroots collective engagement, advocacy and action. Presented by Akron Area YMCA and United Way of Summit County, this unique partnership program is in its seventh year. The Institute begins in February with an orientation and a two-day retreat.
The ten classes that follow are held on Thursday evenings through March. A Saturday bus tour of Summit County neighborhoods is a highlight of the curriculum. Class members also complete and present community impacting group projects. Classes cover a variety of topics ranging from criminal justice to communication and engagement. Institute participants learn a wide variety of skills including how to serve as an advocate for their families and communities, find and utilize resources to work with government agencies and social service providers. Participants will also gain insight into community development, coalition building and how to assess their neighborhood and their own potential as leaders.
Applications are still being accepted. Contact John Hafford II 330.784.0408 ext.2627 (office), Johnh2@akronymca.org with any additional questions.
